Dowsing allows the detection of the presence, and the assessment of
the nature and quality, of various subtle earth energies. Some of the
detectable earth energies are related to geomagnetic anomalies created
by the presence of flowing underground water, of dry faults and fissures,
of subterranean cavities, or of mineral and crystal deposits.
Others have a quality similar in nature to the meridians of "chi"
running in the body of a person and worked with by practitioners of
Traditional Chinese Medicine through acupuncture and similar techniques.
"Chi" paths in the earth have gone by many names in different
cultures, including "dragons", "song lines", "spirit
paths" and "energy leys" or "ley lines". In
addition to the basic patterning of earth energies, dowsing also allows
one to assess the nature of any "place memory" at a site,
as well as other subtle energetic and spiritual forces and presences.
Depending on the strength and character of the earth energies present,
a location may be a healthy and beneficial one for human presence and
activity, it may be indifferent to human presence, or it may be potentially
harmful and undermining to human health at physical, emotional, mental
or spiritual levels. Cultures with a high awareness of the differing
energies of place locate themselves carefully within a landscape, choosing
points of intense energetic focus to use as places of spiritual practice,
calm and serene areas for domestic situations, and avoiding other areas
potentially detrimental for habitual human presence or activity.
Plants and animals have varying sensitivities to earth energies, some
species thriving in locations that are healthy for people, other species
thriving in areas that are unhealthy for people. There are, therefore,
no "good" or "bad" energies, simply ones that humans
can healthily relate to and others that are more challenging.
Spending prolonged periods of time, either at Home or at work, in a
place where the subtle energies are detrimental to human health is a
common dysfunction in contemporary culture, and the effects of this
are termed "geopathic stress".
Competent and experienced dowsers are able to guide the appropriate
siting of buildings and other structures to avoid or minimize the effects
of geopathic stress, and can in many cases alleviate or remove geopathic
stress by employing a variety of techniques.
The British Society of Dowsers supports, encourages and promotes dowsing
and dowsers in a manner consistent with the highest standards of personal
integrity and behaviour, and is a resource for all those interested
in exploring and contributing to the field.
